ART 114C – Intermediate Video: Performance

Spring 2020

Intermediate-level video courses enhance students’ skills for visual and audio production through the context of theme-specific practices within the visual arts. In relation to the chosen intermediate themes, students will establish conceptual frameworks aligning specific processes to given genres. Further development of critiquing skills and a contemporary and historical study of the independent media field and video within the fine arts are vital parts of the course. Students engage media as a tool that expands the capabilities of performance art strategies, moving beyond its capability to simply capture an event. Improvisation, direction, projection, and audio/image mixing & processing in real-time are some of the tactics to be explored.

CDM 130 – Fundamentals of 3D Computer Graphics

Winter 2020

This course provides a thorough introduction to creating 3D computer graphics.  The theory will be introduced and concepts practiced through a series of exercises using Maya.  The focus of this course is on understanding the concepts and becoming comfortable working with complex 3D animation software.  This lays the foundation for greater artistic expression later.  Animation, rendering, and modeling – the three main areas of computer graphics – will all be introduced in this course, but an emphasis will be placed on modeling to provide some depth within a one-quarter course.  There are frequent assignments so that you can apply concepts as you are introduced to them.  Expect a lot of work, but also an introduction to a very exciting medium.

ART 114A – Intermediate Video: Animation

This course will examine the relationship between drawing, digital still, and moving images through the use of drawing techniques, collage, and digital processes. The animation will be taught as both an artistic approach and a conceptual platform. TCS 155 – Intro to Documentary Studies

Fall 2019

The class explores the many new ways that documentary work has evolved in recent years, examining forms such as the personal essay film, found-footage/appropriation work, non-linear, multi-media forms, spoken word, storytelling, oral histories, and other examples of documentary expression.COURSE GOALStudents will study the history and theory of documentary filmmaking as they pertain to representation, objectivity, and voice in light of new developments in documentary production. Students will learn how to approach the preliminary stages of documentary production, from concept to research to proposal writing.

TCS 112 – New Radio Features

Fall 2019

New feature and documentary production for radio and other audio phonic media, including audio streaming websites and art installation. Emphasis on new and experimental approaches to audio production for broadcast on community radio and in international arts programming. Students will study the creative and technical foundations of contemporary radio practice. Students will become familiar with basic radio production workflow, including live broadcasting of music, documentary, and audio theatre. Students will also explore the position of radio in our current media environment.

ART 12 Beginning Video

Fall 2018

This beginning-level course will introduce strategies and basic skills for visual and audio production within the context of certain theoretical and conceptual practices within the visual arts. Structural, experimental, improvisational, and image/audio processing approaches are explored in conjunction with instruction in the use of analog and digital equipment. Development of critiquing skills and a contemporary and historical study of the independent media field and video within fine arts venues are vital parts of the course. Methods of distribution and promotion of artworks are also discussed.
